But there are other issues to consider. Adopting a cat or dog is a serious commitment. It is not like you can flush them down the toilet when they die in a week. As Jenda said to Bart, marriage is a three year commitment. But pets last even longer. If David and I should part ways and I kick him out of my apartment with the clothes on his back and the shame of whatever he did to get kicked out, I would no longer have enough people around often enough to care for a pet. Living with somebody is one thing. Getting a pet together is serious business.

I love Norwegian Forest Cats.
They only shed twice per year, a quite big and independent and fearless and loving creatures.
I love dogs that do not shed, like a tibet terrier.
the chihuahua is from mexico where i am now and they are about the size of a forest cat. loving, yappy and they eat vegetables.
the smartest and most wonderful dog of all is my dog of course and he is from the breed, border collie. you could get small ones like this. there is a miniature breed and if you are athletic which I think you are, you could enter them in agility competitions etc. but then you would need a dog with papers. they also need to be taken out for walks every day. they are friendly, will not bite your neighbours but they will defend you with their lives. they are smart however and can open doors and even fridges. They shed sometimes and have long hair. you dont have to keep them up.

We once had a rescue home for swiss cats and once had 20 at home. but when we decided to travel we had to give this activity up.
i have had dogs and cats all of my life... which is a long time... i am 58.
i would suggest that you get either a border collie or a poodle. You seeom a person who needs a smart dog that can either be active or not. self reliant. and if you get a cat, get one that gets along with dogs.
poodles are wonderful and you could get them in any size. they are highly intelligent, brave and full of love. they do not shed. you could fancy them up if you want or give them a haircut now and again. they rarely get sick and they have a long life. you could go out sporting with them, or if in france take them into any fancy restaurant. people are not scared of them.

I would love to get a dog like Uggie in The Artist. Jack Russell terriers are a hoot, loaded with personality, and cute as well.
I once had a beautiful Siamese cat, and she let me live with her as long as I fed her and gave her lots of affection. :-)
It sounds like I should be a cat person, but I am a total slave to my dog, no doubts at all!

Swiss rescue uses border collies a lot. Finding people in the snow after avalanches or just finding people. They also use these dogs to visit with old people and the sick. They are very sensitive to pain and try to alleviate it.
You can use them to round up sheep. You have to be careful at parties. I have seen a group of people suddenly collecting in a corner and I know right away that the dog has been secretly herding them. They do it very unobtrusively.
We use ours to find truffles. St. Bernards were useful back in the day because they were not scared of bears and wolves.
Swiss rescue uses helicopters and these dogs love flying. You might want to consider that factor as well. I am not sure if they can actually fly a helicopter but borders are very easy to train. They are wonderful workers and pack animals. so if you want to go for a walk, you could give your dog a packsack. They are very resistant, and have great endurance. This means that they get easily bored. Honest. This is really the last one.
I think it's great that you're trying out to have a pet at home. But like you said, you have to be a responsible pet owner. Let's just hope, your out of town skeds with your roommate never happen on the same dates so your pet would never have to be left alone. Then again, you can always choose to have someone over as a sitter for your pet just in case.
I'll probably never have to use any future pets to rescue people trapped in avalanches. That's not a major problem around here.
I also don't have very many sheep in my apartment.
And I would absolutely never trust any dog to fly a helicopter. They simply can't tell a good pilot's joke.
