Disproportionate Response

These are not political prisoners. These are not conscientious objectors or people who failed to pay parking fines. These are cold blooded murderers responsible for the violent deaths of 600 innocent men, women, children, including more than a few innocent Palestinian civilians. Palestinian terrorists generally kill more Palestinians than they kill Israelis. And soon they will be free to kill again.

Gilad Shalit was 19 years old when he was kidnapped. He is 26 now. When he finally goes home he will probably go to school or get a job and live out his life as he would have had he never been kidnapped. Most of the 1027 will not live the rest of their lives peacefully. They will be welcomed back by rejoicing Palestinians before they return to killing Palestinians in their quest to kill Israel.

A quick preliminary comment.

I have worked most of my adult life in governemnt (ok, ok work might not be the right word, let us say doing stuff).

Most of this time was spent in corporate policy contexts. I know viscerally that all policy decisions have their backgrounds and ultimately reasons based on fingernail chewing alternative scenerios.

I dont know why israel agreed to this disproportion. Somewhere there has to be a disproportionate benefit or a hard head outfit like Israel would never go for it. I wonder what impact the Arab Spring had on this choice, or the UN stuff, or Obama or maybe a thousand extra mouths to feed was just too much.

Mr and Mrs Shalit would think it was not disproportionate to have their son back and equally families destroyed by murder will not find peace when the guilty are set free on a trade deal.

ergo, my sense of lack of information. what is the fundamental issue at stake here. dont know. How may the lives of thousands or even millions now and in the future may be affected.

The Arab protests had a lot to do with it. Egypt only showed interest in mediating when their government collapsed and the new people in charge decided it might be a good idea to curry favour with the Americans.

Obama had nothing to do with it. He's mostly seen here as pro-Palestine. He's also seen in Palestine as pro-Israel.
