How to Be Stupid

The UN envoy to the Middle East said that evicting people was against the Geneva Conventions guidelines for occupied territory. Somebody needs to tell the UN that Israel does not consider any part of Israel occupied territory.

I would like Tel Aviv to be the capital just as much as any European. It would make my life easier on a number of levels. But sooner or later we are all going to have to face the fact that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. You can’t decide ours anymore than we can decide yours. And if we can then I say San Francisco is America’s new capital. Just to force all those politicians to live there. Republicans will love the Castro.

And anybody whose job title is UN envoy to the Middle East should be sacked immediately. None of the parties involved care what the UN says. You might as well make Tony Blair a special peace envoy. That would be funny were it not so appalling.

Interesting perspective. I could not ascertain whether you agree with the evictions or not. The British perspective is that Jerusalem will someday be halved--the West Jerusalem for Jews and the East Jerusalem for the Arabs. If Israel continues to evict Arabs from the East Jerusalem and replace them with Jews--that will only make it that much harder for Arabs to form the East Jerusalem as their capitol.

Jerusalem. The power of place and symbol. I need but think of the fall of the Berlin Wall to remind me that walls do not contribute to good capitals....

It took the unified germany about 10 minutes to resituate their capital from Bonn to Berlin when the wall came down.

An aside. As a North American Indian, I am an original citizen of William Blake's Jerusalem!

If one sovereign state invades and occupies another sovereign state, it is against the Geneva Conventions for the occupier state to evict the native peoples of the occupied state from their homes.

Palestine has never been a sovereign country. They've gone out of their way to see to that.

Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Anybody who wants to divide it will have as much trouble as dividing Ottawa or Taipei.

Ottawa IS divided. By the Ottawa River. On the one side we have the english, on the other, the French. On the one side the Protestants, on the Other the Catholics. Queen Victoria picked the site precisely because this could be done and could more easily be defended since we were all at war with the Americans then and Ottawa is located on the interior but serviced by the Rideau Canal which ultimately linked up to the Great Lakes, the St. Laurence and thereby the Atlantic.

Speaking of war, The Chaudiere Regiment, one of the outfits that landed at Normandy and ultimately entered Germany is from across the River on the Quebec Side. Ottawa is on the Ontario side and is named after the Ottawa Indians who used to live on both sides of the River until they were kicked out by the British. There history goes back to well before your king David's time.
