Rosebud

Citizen Kane is a dream. I don’t mean it is a great movie. It is but I’m saying that what takes place in the movie is a dream; Kane’s dream. From the time he lets go of whatever control he thought he had and drops Susan’s globe onto the foor to the sled thrown into the fires of Hell we are watching his last moments of cognition before he dies. The No Trespassing sign at the film’s opening is a warning to us. We the viewers are about to enter his most private thoughts.
