Better Dead Than Red

Then there’s this guy. He is being lauded and vilified for calling his president a liar. And now he is famous for it. I had never heard of him before. Had you?

Obama has been called a lot of things. The reason this is getting attention is because it happened in Congress. Is this really the first time somebody in Congress has been rude to the American president? I think somebody in the Knesset has called every Israeli PM a liar. Have you ever watched the British Parliament? They act like teenagers debating their favourite video games.

Yes, there will be a faction that interprets and and all criticism of Obama as racist but that doesn't mean that there is no racism involved at all. Another slogan we hear is, "I want my country back!" What country is that and who do you want it back from?

The Joe Wilson thing is notable only because it was his mob who were claiming it was unpatriotic to criticise the president at all, and you should always show due respect to the office no matter who holds it. Not the way we do things here either, but I can get behind that principle providing they apply it to all sides equally.

Jon Stewart explained the problem as being that the teabaggers don't understand the difference between tyranny and losing. I'm not sure if it's even that. It's just governing. Here's an administration that, whether you agree or not, is actually doing what it was put there to do rather than just passing it all on to lobbyists and corporations, yet somehow that translates as an affront to freedom. The protesters claim to be against big government regardless of partisanship. If that's true, one can only assume they've been asleep for eight years.

Many Americans seem to think they have a patent on freedom but I feel far more free as an Australian, and all I've ever been called upon to do for my country is to pay tax and vote. What a country!

Repubs don't want healthcare for all because that would mean less $$ for them. Affordable healtchare for all Americans=less profit for insurance cos=smaller campaign contributions to repubs. Its the same reason they don't want alternative fuel, only this money tree will kill us all much faster than global warming.

We spend more money than the rest of the world on healthcare and our quality of care isn't even close to the best. We're responsible for more greenhouse gasses than any other nation and we buy more oil that profits terrorists than the rest of the world. The money spent on the illegal occupation of Iraq could give the best heathcare in the world to every American, finance alternative energy and get every American out of foreclosure.

FDR proposed amending the constitution to guarantee every American had healthcare, employment and education 60 years ago. It never happened because he didn't want to be labelled communist. That same boogeyman has kept real progress away from Americans ever since. Meanwhile every otehr developed nation in the world has affordable healthcare, higher education standards and lower unemployment.

The economic melthdown has shown us what greed does. It's been keeping us down for years and now its finally killing us.

Why do you hate America?

Americans think everything they don't like is Communism. Healthcare isn't Communism. Voting for someone who don't agree with isn't Communism. Protestation isn't Communism. Perhaps they have feared it so long because they don't know what it is.

Why do so many people want to go to America, it has such a bad reputation and a wide division between rich and poor?

People go to America to escape. It has many problems, but very little genocide, famine, extrajudicial imprisonment, junta death squads. The same can be said of most developed democracies, but America has more Lebensraum than any of them, save Russia or Australia. Russia is mostly ice and Australia is mostly sand. America has a wider variety of scenery.

I think all countries have a wide division between rich and poor.
