Why I’m Not a Snob

By the time I went to university I was a movie junkie. I felt empty if I did not see at least two or three movies a week. I never really cared about genres but at this point I preferred surreal comedies. While some of my friends and every nerd on the planet could quote Life of Brian I was quoting The Meaning of Life. I was proud of my imitation of the machine that goes ping.

I always defended Mel Brooks up until Men in Tights and was very familiar with all of Woody Allen’s “early funny” movies. I was just getting into the Coen brothers. Fargo was the first movie I saw in an American cinema.

"To many of my professors and most of my classmates France and Italy were the only countries that mattered."

People are afraid to explore the unknown so they stay with the basics, it's safer and easier to understand.

In USA people think that everything from Europe is GREAT. I was just watching the travel chanel and Samantha Brown (I hate her :)) was in Buenos Aires, Argentina and she was so annoying. She said "Buenos Aires is one alternative to Europe, it's cheaper, blah blah blah, European, European, European".

In fact, Buenos Aires has some European feel but Argentina is bigger than Buenos Aires. What happened to their cultural identity? Are they that boring? Of course not! I went to Argentina because my ex is from Cordoba.
I went there looking for the Argentinean soul. If I wanted to go to Europe, why would I visit Argentina? If I go to the South of Brazil, I can pretend I am in "Europe". It's European enough and they have the largest Oktoberfest outside Germany. Big deal...

It's not bad to be European, to enjoy their arts etc. We are part European, we speak one or more European languages, part of our culture is European etc but Europe is not the only interesting continent on Earth.

Samantha Brown also went to Portugal and I almost died, no comments on her comments.
I would just like to let her know that Portuguese is older than Spanish.

I don't think Europeans are as snobs as Americans. Everybody wants to learn French here. When I was in my country I wanted to learn Tupi Guarani. French, Italian, Spanish can wait. No one wants to learn the native languages of USA, you know, I don't get it.

That's why I love to talk to my Chinese friend. She is so fresh, open minded, she has a different view of things.
She knows that Brazil is Brazil, Mexico is Mexico, Europe is Europe and everybody is great. I like French movies, noir and stuff the same way I enjoy Mexican movies.

Same for music. People think that England is the place where the best music of the world come from. I noticed that English speakers are arrogant somehow because they only listen to a song if they know what it means and that means, they will only listen to songs in English.

Is it too hard to copy and paste the damn lyric in whatever language to google translate and translate it into English?

I listen to everything. I try to feel the world as much as I can. This is one of my favourite South African's psychedelic band

French people like world wide arts. While people kiss their butt and become intellectually limited, they want the world. Same for Italians. They know they did good things but they know there are also good things outside their country. Maybe that's why they can do good things? ;)

A French told me that people love Bossa Nova in France and that samba was born in the wrong place. They try hard to make something that we can make naturally but in Brazil what people want? British music. Our beautiful folklore is completely ignored!!!

It's sad that these type of people will never know how brilliant someone like Rogério Sganzerla was. Their loss. ;)

This is one of my favourite Brazilian movies. It's from 1968. Copacabana deceives me. Marginal cinema at its best.

"What type of people live in Copacabana" boooo ahahahahahahha

I love the part where the guys are playing with the ball and the guy asks "Is the future of the nation in the head of these young men?" HAHAHAH

It's a funny movie, not sure if they have it in English. Brazilian humor at its best, not sure if people would get it by the way.

There are some mistakes, bad spelling etc, but it's almost 4 am, I am in another dimension. Take care Mia and let us know what happens in the reunion.

Spelling errors are tolerated here. I'm not an English teacher. Anymore.

Argentina is probably the top place I want to visit. And not because I want it to be like anyplace else.

I think when Americans travel they want to stay within their comfort level. They stay at corporate hotels and eat hotel food. The same is true with movies and music. If it's not in English it's not considered accessible. I do think the best music in the world came from England but I've no problems listening to other music. And I don't think all English music is good. Not even close.

But Americans aren't the only people who want to travel and still feel they're at home. Chinese tour groups almost always bring their own food when they visit Africa.

I'm sure Copacabana me Engana is available on DVD with English subtitles. But I don't think da Fontoura is very famous north of Brazil.

I agree 100%. Film should be entertaining first, and anything else comes second. Of course, one major problem *I* find with most American films is that they are either super mainstream dreck, or they are pretentious "indie" films. I find that good simple entertaining films are far more likely to be foreign, be it from Germany, China, Korea or wherever. The really sad part of that is that few foreign films can really make it in the States, they all have to be remade for domestic consumption. Argh!

I think all movies are entertaining to somebody. I like the American art-house films. I just don't always like the people who think they're the reason life exists.
